Above, you see the first draft for my double page spread.
As you can see, the final draft (below) is very similar.

After playing around with colour schemes, I decided the green and black theme was the one to go for.

This is the double-page spread for my new music magazine.
I used the same pink and green used throughout the magazine.

Pink = R, 255 G, 0 B, 255.
Green = R, 0. G, 255. B, 0.

I used the same Arial Rounded MT Bold font as to keep to the house style.

The artist Heather Moon's questions are similar to Janis's to show that they are similar artists. I wanted, for the Janis interview, for fans to feel like they're getting new information.

I used microsoft publisher to create all the pages of my music magazine.

CONTENTS

This is the draft for my contents page. As you can see, it is a very rough draft.
If you compare this with the below final draft of my contents page, you will notice a few differences but for the most part a have kept the to my original plans.

This is the contents page for my music magazine ''Janis''
I took heavy inspiration from SHINDIG magazine to design this, this is the SHINDIG contents page I have been taking the inspiration from -

As you can see, the layout of my magazine is very similar. I was having difficulty attempting to create a contents page without the another magazine as an example and I thought this design was minimal but worked very well with the psychedelic themes of the magazine.

The colours I used, were -

R -230
G -204
B -230, for the lilac box.

R -255
G -0
B -255, for the pink box.

And the preset white and black for all of the text.

Final Draft

This is the final draft of the front cover of my new music magazine. I have made my own barcode using http://www.barcodesinc.com/generator/index.php but not much else has changed.
I have not stretched the image of Janis on this version, where as in the first draft I had. I have also rotated the masthead so that it is no longer to the side as I was told by my peers that it was difficult to read.

Picture comparison

The pictures of the two artists are very similar. The bottom is my own, the top is an image I found on google and edited. The bottom image needed posterizing, the top didn't. You can notice a clear difference in the amount of posterization between the two images. However, I think the two images work well together as Janis Joplin is an old artist and Heather Moon is new.

Photo Editing...

This is the picture I have chosen to use for the interview with the solo artist similar to Janis Joplin. I chose this picture because it is very natural looking. I like the way in which the rust dress gives a 60s feel. I also thought that this picture was most similar to pictures of Janis Joplin I will upload at a later date which will too be used for an interview, but a ''lost'' one from Joplin herself.

Editing.
Using Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, I made the image black and white to start the editing process. I simply lowered the saturation to minimum.

I think posterized by image by clicking adjustments and that posterize. I then set to a level 13/14.

To get this green tint to the image, I clicked Enhance, Adjust Colour, Add Green, Darken. Close. Same path again, Add Red, Darken.
I think adjusted the saturation of about half of it's usual colour to get a colour similar to the one in which I edited the Janis Joplin image on my front page.
I plan to edit all of the images in my magazine in this way to keep to the house style.

Photographs

These are the pictures I have taken of the (fake) new up and coming singer '' Heather Moon'' in the style of Janis Joplin.

I chose not to use these images as I didn't feel they had a real ''Janis'' vibe to them.

This is the picture I have chosen to use for the magazine, it is quite similar to the picture of Janis Joplin I am using for the double-page spread.

I will be putting both images and both interview's on the same double page spread and the interview with Heather Moon will use similar questions as the lost interview with Janis Joplin.

This is the release form from the pictures of Jodie as Heather Moon -

And this is the release form for Jodie Burr to state that she agrees to have her images used as her being my solo artist Heather Moon -

I found this on www.red.mmu.ac.uk -

Prior to taking a photograph of an individual, the individual must be informed of the
purpose(s) for which the photograph(s) will be used and asked to give their consent.
In addition, the individual should be provided with any other necessary information to
ensure fairness and transparency. By way  of example, the individual should be
informed whether the photograph(s) will be passed to a third party or displayed on the
internet. If this is not clearly explained to the individual prior to taking the
photograph(s) then the photograph(s) may not be passed to a third party or displayed
on the internet.

This is why I decided to construct release forms for my magazine. As for it to be entirely ethical and as real as possible.

Research

I have been using the re-launched magazine Shindig in order to inspire me for my music magazine. The magazine was re-launched in 2007. It contains psychedelic, garage, beat, powerpop, soul and folk news and music. The main issue I have been taking inspiration from is September 2009 issue, which looks like this -

My front cover is pretty similar to this, in my opinion. The same idea behind the big picture and the masthead being the main focus. My colour scheme is bright, like this one, green and pink being the main focus.

Sample CD #2

This is the front cover of my sample CD for my music magazine -

It has the same monochrome floral background as the front page. I used Rosewood Std Regular font for the word ''JANIS'' and used colour code #ff00ff (I would have rather used the RGB bar, but MAGIX Xtreme Print Studio does not have this.) I wanted to keep the theme throughout all aspects of the magazine as it looks more professional, in my opinion.

This is the back of the CD -

I used a different background for this, as I had a hard time getting the writing to show up. (http://media.photobucket.com/image/black%20background%20white%20flowers/Navi88_/Background.png) But have still kept to the magazine's monochrome + a little bit of colour theme! The three songs on the back are three songs I have made up in order to make a ''lost'' CD.

This is the CD itself-

I kept it black, as with MAGIX Xtreme Print Studio you cannot add backgrounds to the CD's themselves. I still kept to a black and pink theme (again, #ff00ff). I used the same Rosewood Std Regular font, as for all the aspects of the CD.

Sample CD

For my music magazine, which as I explained will be based around lost interviews and songs from Janis Joplin, I will be designing a CD with 3 lost tracks from Janis Joplin. The whole magazine is fictional, so I can make it how I'd like.

I will be keeping with the monochrome theme, much like the front page...
The 3 fictional lost tracks will be called -

  1. Sing me to sleep, Stephen.
  2. Aint no woman like me.
  3. A sweet buddy of mine.
I will be using MAGIX XTREME PRINT STUDIO to design my sample CD and it's cover.

The issue of Shindig magazine that I have been looking at also came with a sample CD and I have taken visual inspiration from that CD to create my own.

This is the first draft of the front cover of my new Music Magazine.
As you saw below, I had conducted a survey of 13 people and the majority said that the idea I had would be an effective one and that the colour scheme of a floral monochrome background with a bright masthead would work well.

I have worked on this front cover for about 2 hours and I'm very happy with the outcome.

Why did you use these colours and images?
I wanted the magazine to have a true 60's vibe, but I also wanted a mod type look to it also. I used http://www.dafont.com/ for the font for the word ''JANIS''. I thought this font would be appropriate as it is very 60's influenced as it's called ''60's POP''. I made the masthead colourful as to make it stand out from the rest of the front cover. I used this picture of Janis Joplin (as it is one of her most famous) because she looks very happy and I could manipulate it easily.

What edits did you make to the image?
I got the image of Janis Joplin from Google Images (https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRSMwutGCPXATUUsN-2hx1Kq_ldZfwes20EJdeO2NCKoot-weyz5PRe7xD6Pw1E-qSSzjG_yiqNwB5Ixkmga-ihhKO_I5QEsFKL10r3e_k4qz2UwWxTVz6jkVzY962WhOuHk01EtxLLMDO/s1600/Janis+Joplin.jpg). As you can see, the image is already posterized so I only made minor edits to the picture itself. I edited using Adobe Photoshop Elements. I removed the background of the picture by using the magnetic lasoo tool and tracing around Janis until it was only her remaining. I then removed the background. To give the image the green tint, I used the magic wand tool and selected all of Janis, I then clicked enchance, adjust colour and choosed edit colour. I then used Green Darken.

I chose to price the magazine at 3.99 in order to make it affordable to everyone who might want to buy it. The magazine will include a sample CD (which I will design at a later date) of lost singles from Janis Joplin herself (theoretically, ofcourse.)

My Survey

These are the results from the survey I conducted to my friends and people on facebook.
The results clearly show that to question one people seem to think this idea would be effective and for question two people like the idea of the monochrome flowers with the bright masthead.

Main Task - Music Magazine - Research.

I have been researching different kinds of music magazines that are focused on 50's/60's and early 70's music.

I have found an issue of a magazine called ''Uncut'' (July 2011) in which the issue is focused on the band ''The Small Faces.''
(http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=60s+music+magazines&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1024&bih=677&tbm=isch&tbnid=0Bo_NbPBMBNt_M:&imgrefurl=http://www.wotyougot.com/03-06-2011/uncut/small-faces-cover-july-2011-issue/&docid=jQqSY19-BY1EmM&imgurl=http://www.wotyougot.com/pictures/small-faces-cover-uncut-magazine-july-2011.jpeg&w=337&h=480&ei=QuO6TvX0KcrV8gOGlryvBw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=795&vpy=175&dur=5559&hovh=268&hovw=188&tx=165&ty=134&sig=101262864471997979583&page=1&tbnh=153&tbnw=106&start=0&ndsp=14&ved=1t:429,r:8,s:0) This is the image.

I want to make my magazine more psychedelic than this and I want it to apply to anyone who enjoys the music of Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane... That kind of thing.
I will be making a survey asking 10-15 people I know what they'd like from a magazine of this nature and whether my two-page should/should not be a (fake) interview from a famous/deceased artist that somehow got lost, or for a new tribute band to the likes of a band like this.

I'd like for my magazine to have a similar layout to the Uncut magazine featured above, but ofcourse with a different title and different colour scheme fitted to the needs of my target audience (more than likely very colourful.)

Preliminary task - Contents Page.

This is the contents page for my school newspaper -

I made a couple of changes. I ended up using word art for the title, using Georgia font. The text is all still the same teal shade as the masthead on the front cover (Red: 36, Green: 96, Blue: 82.) I also added that the magazine is made of 100% recycled paper, keeping to the school's green theme.
I am using an image which I got from google on  the contents page of my school magazine, here is the editing process:

This is the original image.

I again used the magic tool to select different parts of the tree stump and branches as I wanted to enchance the colour and make it more mystical looking, as my school is named Pixie High.

I then used auto colour correction on the area's and it made my tree stump a lilac colour, similar to what I wanted.

And this is what the finished image looks like:

This is the front cover of my school magazine.

I used Microsoft Publisher to create my front page.
The masthead is in Engravers MT font in a dark teal colour (Red: 36, Green: 96, Blue: 82.)
I used Word Art to add the rainbow ''Pixie High Goes Green'' at the bottom of the page.
I used a border to add the butterflies around the edge of the masthead at the title at the bottom of the page.

Image Editing -

I edited the image of the student using Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0.

I used the magic wand tool to select part of Jodie's hoodie to edit.

I then used Auto Contrast to give Jodie's hoodie a tie-dye look -

I was left with this. I then repeated the process and filled the hoodie with the same effect, using the magic wand tool.

This is the final product:
